Parking

Blue badge holders can park in front of Number 9, Newnham Road, or around the corner on Albany Road.

'The Haven' - Number 11 Newnham Road (main museum building)

There is a step-free entrance located to the left of the main museum gate. Step-free and wheelchair access to the museum is via our side door on Castle Road:

  • At the Museum main entrance, turn left and then make an immediate right onto Castle Road where you will find our side gate, ramp and accessible entrance. Please ring the doorbell at this entrance for access.
Step-free access to the museum building
  • There is also an extra-wide entrance at number 7 Newnham Road. This option is on offer for users of very large powered wheelchairs. If you need to use this entrance we advise calling ahead on 01234 353178.

Toilets

There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor within 'Castleside', which is across from The Haven. The nearest Changing Places toilet is at The Higgins Bedford, Castle Lane, Bedford MK40 3XD.

Other buildings & grounds

The Haven, Castleside and the Tea Room are step-free and accessible. We have easy grip cutlery available in the Tea Room, please ask a member of staff if this is required.

  • Access is limited some areas of the Gardens. The Wireless Room, Chapel and Founder's House buildings have steps, uneven surfaces and narrow doorways.
  • Due to the historic buildings and pathways, large motorised wheelchairs and scooters may not be able to access parts of the site.

Assistance dogs

Assistance and support dogs are allowed anywhere in the Museum buildings and grounds.

Sensory information

There are two buildings where music and sound play:

  • The Wireless Room has a motion-sensor radio which plays this tune: https://youtu.be/RMEpjDFHN50
  • Founder's House has a video which features a voiceover and background music. This video only plays when a visitor presses the button.
  • Founder's House also has motion-sensor piano music, which plays as you walk from the entrance area towards the front rooms.

We do not use electronic hand-dryers on site.

The Museum site and grounds are a very quiet space. It is unusual for us to have any large groups visiting. If you are concerned about this please call us first to check whether there are any group visits or activities happening- 01234 353178. The quietest time to visit is normally a Thursday morning.

  • We have maintenance and garden work sometimes at the Museum. Normally this work takes place outside of museum opening hours. If you are concerned please call us before you arrive and we will check for you.

Light levels:

The lighting across the whole museum is either low or very low, this is to protect the objects on display. Most rooms are lit with lamps with warm light. None of our public spaces have fluorescent lighting.

Parent and baby friendly

The Panacea Museum welcomes families with young children and babies. A baby changing station can be found within our accessible toilet in the main Castleside building, and is wide enough to cater for prams and buggies. We advise using the step-free entrance on Castle Road as above, as there are several steps up to the main door making it difficult to manoeuvre a buggy.
