Ceramicists and tutor Mandy Caldon, has been a keen supporter of environmentally aware groups and has planned this project for some time. Teaching at Bedford Arts and Crafts Centre for many years, students who showed an interest in exhibiting and the environment have been busy researching and creating work for the theme. Mandy said ‘I have always been concerned about issues such a conservation and climate change etc. Having had a small exhibition at the Arts Centre 2 years ago that was received with great interest, I felt inspired to organise an exhibition and take it on tour! The students have really enjoyed creating various ceramics pieces to address important global concerns. We have all learned so much researching environmental issues. It certainly makes you think twice about our lifestyle choices and the way it affects our environment and ultimately our world. The exhibition is a great way of not only the students learning about these issues but getting the message out to the public too.
Art is a great way to convey a message to people who wouldn’t normally be aware about certain things that even small, they can do to make a change. Micro beads for example that are used in our face wash, ends up in the sea and ultimately in fish’s stomachs.
This tour is so exciting, with those involved improving their knowledge, skills and designs as the exhibition travels around the galleries in Bedfordshire and further afield. The first exhibition will be on at the Panacea from 28th June until 1st July.
